Abstract
AlargenumberofnewfastreactorsmaybeneededearlierthanforeseenintheGenerationIVplans.AccordingtothemedianforecastoftheSpecialReportonEmissionScenarioscommissionedbytheIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateControlnuclearpowerwillincreasebyafactoroffourby2050.Thedriversforthisexpectedboostaretheincreasingenergydemandindevelopingcountries,energysecurity,butalsoclimateconcerns.However,stayingwithaonce-throughcyclewillleadtobothasubstantiallyincreasedamountofhigh-levelnuclearwasteandanupwardpressureonthepriceofuraniumandevenconcernsaboutitsavailabilityinthecomingdecades.Therefore,itappearswisetoacceleratethedevelopmentoffastreactorsandefficientre-processingtechnologies.
