Abstract
We show how to cast a set of experimental data collected by two inertial observers into a complex function in such a way that the Lorentz transformations are naturally implied by elementary algebra. Here we consider only measurements of time intervals and spatial distances. Recalling that a complex function is made of three components, namely a real part, an imaginary part and a modulus, which links the first two components into a strict relation, we associate each component to a specific physical measurement.
