Excited states in 161,162Yb seen as mass asymmetric nuclear molecules

A study is made of nuclear molecular configurations in 161,162Yb. It is concluded that certain molecular configurations may be sufficiently stable at high spin for the depopulating gamma transitions to be observable above the background of statistical transitions. Such gamma transitions may have been observed in recent experiments on fusion reactions of 17,18O and 144Sm.
