Morphologically distinct trajectories of structural evolution in nuclei and their empirical signatures

Different classes of evolutionary tracks in nuclear spherical-deformed transition regions are discussed. For each trajectory we associate a characteristic behavior for simple observables based on low-lying energy levels. The usefulness of this morphological classification for the study of exotic nuclei is stressed.
