Nonhydrostatic two-layer models of incompressible flow

Several reduced dimension two layer models of incompressible flow are developed. These are natural extensions of the Green-Naghdi dispersive single layer shallow water model. It is shown that the resulting system of partial differential equations is essentially ill-posed, in agreement with the classic Helmholtz instability, but that a fourth order dissipation has a regularizing effect.
