An approach to unify model definition and manipulation

Structured Modeling(SM), developed by Geoffrion,is an unified formal framework for modeling. It obviously is general across a wide range of modeling domains and techniques. However, SM problem statements and graphs are quite abstract. To improve SMʹs external representation scheme, this paper puts forword a Hierarchical Spreadsheet framework for Modeling(HSM). While it is the same an excellent internal representation scheme as SM,it is an ideal external representation scheme. Moreover,this framework provides a foundation for the functional programming languages and query languages in the relational database. Most importantly, this framework integrates model representation, model manipulation, database management.
