Abstract
A decision-making system working with intelligent sensors in end milling operations proposed to form an inprocess detecting tool breakage system (IDTBS) is the focus of this paper. In an unmanned flexible manufacturing system (UFMS), because of the absence of human operators, the machining process monitoring function must be performed by sensors associated with decision-making systems. Two concepts will be introduced: 1) the fuzzy logic inference used as a decision-making system to detect tool breakage; and 2) multiple tools with the same cutting pattern but different fracture degrees were selected to execute the experiment. The fuzzy logic inference was used to integrate cutting force data and machining parameters to compare with the fuzzy if-then rule-bank and make a decision regarding tool conditions.
