Abstract :
Identifying criticalnodesinagraphisimportanttounderstandthestructuralcharacteristicsandthe
connectivity propertiesofthenetwork.Inthispaper,wefocusondetectingcriticalnodes,ornodes
whose deletionresultsintheminimumpair-wiseconnectivityamongtheremainingnodes.Thisproblem,
known asthe critical nodeproblem has applicationsinseveralfieldsincludingbiomedicine,telecom-
munications, andmilitarystrategicplanning.Weshowthattherecognitionversionoftheproblemis
NP-complete andderiveamathematicalformulationbasedonintegerlinearprogramming.Inaddition,
we proposeaheuristicfortheproblemwhichexploitsthecombinatorialstructureofthegraph.The
heuristic isthenenhancedbytheapplicationofalocalimprovementmethod.Acomputationalstudyis
presented inwhichweapplytheintegerprogrammingformulationandtheheuristictorealandrandomly
generated datasets.Forallinstancestested,theheuristicisabletoefficientlyprovideoptimalsolutions
in afractionofthetimerequiredbyacommercialsoftwarepackage.
