Abstract
The aimofthispaperistwofold.Firstweinvestigatethethreedifferenttypesofsystems,namelycellular
layout (CL),processlayout(PL)andvirtualcells(VCs).VCsareaddressedbyusingfamily-basedschedul-
ing rule,developedbyapartallocationalgorithminaPL.Simulationisusedtocomparethreetypesof
systems undertheperformancemetricssuchasmeanflowtimeandmeantardiness.Resultsindicate
that VCshavebetterresponsivenessintermsoftheperformancemetrics.Secondwedevelopanew
ant colonyoptimization-basedmetamodelsfedbyexistingsimulationrunstorepresenttheprospective
simulation runs,whichrequirealotoftimeandeffort.Regressionmetamodels,whichallowustoobtain
much fasterresults,areseentobepromisingtoestimatethesystemsbehaviors.
