Abstract :
In thispaper,wepresentaneffectivememeticalgorithmforthevehicleroutingproblemwithtime
windows (VRPTW).Thepaperbuildsuponanexistingedgeassemblycrossover(EAX)developedforthe
capacitated VRP.TheadjustmentsoftheEAXoperatorandtheintroductionofanovelpenaltyfunction
to eliminateviolationsofthetimewindowconstraintaswellasthecapacityconstraintfromoffspring
solutions generatedbytheEAXoperatorhaveprovenessentialtotheheuristicʹsperformance.Experi-
mental resultsonSolomonʹsandGehringandHombergerbenchmarksdemonstratethatouralgorithm
outperforms previousapproachesandisabletoimprove184best-knownsolutionsoutof356instances.
