Abstract :
Consider amanufacturingcelloftwoidenticalCNCmachinesandamaterialhandlingrobot.Identical parts requestingthecompletionofanumberofoperationsaretobeproducedinacyclicschedulingen- vironment throughaflowshoptypesetting.Theexistingstudiesintheliteratureoverlooktheflexibility of theCNCmachinesbyassumingthatboththeallocationoftheoperationstothemachinesaswellas their respectiveprocessingtimesarefixed.Consequently, theprovidedresultsmaybeeithersuboptimal or validunderunnecessarilylimitingassumptionsforaflexiblemanufacturingcell.Theallocationsofthe operations tothetwomachinesandtheprocessingtimeofanoperationonamachinecanbechanged by alteringthemachiningconditionsofthatmachinesuchasthespeedandthefeedrateinaCNC turning machine.Suchflexibilitiesconstitutethepointoforiginofthecurrentstudy.Theallocationof the operationstothemachinesandthemachiningconditionsofthemachinesaffecttheprocessingtimes which, inturn,affectthecycletime.Ontheotherhand,themachiningconditionsalsoaffectthemanu- facturing cost.Thisstudyisthefirsttoconsiderabicriteriamodelwhichdeterminestheallocationofthe operations tothemachines, theprocessingtimesoftheoperationsonthemachines, andtherobotmove sequence thatjointlyminimizethecycletimeandthetotalmanufacturingcost.Weprovidealgorithms for thetwo1-unitcyclesandtesttheirefficiencyintermsofthesolutionqualityandthecomputation time byawiderangeofexperimentsonvaryingdesignparameters.
