Abstract
Optimization andheuristicmethodsforthedesignofmediumtolargestorageareanetworks(SANs)are
in theearlystagesofdevelopment,butarerequirediflargeclusteredstoragesystemsaretobecomea
viable alternativetoexpensivemonolithicstorage.Wepresenthereanewmixed-integerformulationfor
optimal designofastorageareanetwork.OurformulationmodelstheSingle-edgeCore-Edgetopology.
Using atestbedofmediumtolargeproblems,wecomparethesolutiontimesforournewformulation
to thecurrentbenchmarkintheliterature—ourformulationsolvesinsignificantlylesstimewithan
off-the-shelf optimizationsoftwarepackage.Wealsogenerateproblem-specificcutstofurtherreducethe
solution timeforourformulation.Analgorithm,whichincludesanintegerprogrammingsubproblem,is
described forgeneratingsomeofthesecuts.Foralltestproblems,thecutsyieldafurtherreductionin
the solutiontime.
