Abstract :
Weconsidersystemsoftandemblockingqueueshavingacommonretrialqueue.Themodelrepresents
dynamicsofshortTCPtransfersintheInternet.Analyticalresultsareavailableonlyforaspecific
examplewithtwoqueuesintandem.Weproposeapproximationproceduresinvolvingsimpleanalytic
expressions,basedonmeanvalueanalysis(MVA)andonfixedpointapproach(FPA).Themeansojourn
time ofajobinthesystemandthemeannumberofvisitstotheorbitqueueareestimatedbytheMVA
which needsasaninputthefractionsofblockedjobsintheprimaryqueues.Thefractionsofblocked
jobs areestimatedbyFPA.Usingabenchmarkexampleofthesystemwithtwoprimaryqueues,we
concludethattheapproximationworkswellinthelighttrafficregime.Wenotethatourapproach
becomesexactiftheblockingprobabilitiesarefixed.Finally,weconsidertwooptimizationproblems
regardingminimizingmeantotalsojourntimeofajobinthesystem:(i)findingthebestorderofqueues
and (ii)allocatingagivencapacityamongtheprimaryqueues.
