Abstract :
In thispaperweconsiderthequadraticminimumspanningtreeproblem(QMSTP)whichisknownto
be NP-hard.Givenacompletegraph,theQMSTPconsistsoffindingaminimumspanningtree(MST)
whereinteractioncostsbetweenpairsofedgesareprescribed.ALagrangianrelaxationprocedureis
devised andanefficientlocalsearchalgorithmwithtabuthresholdingisdeveloped.Computational
experimentsarereportedonstandardtestinstances,randomlygeneratedtestinstancesandquadratic
assignmentproblem(QAP)instancesfromtheQAPLIBbyusingatransformationscheme.Thelocal
search heuristicyieldsverygoodperformanceandtheLagrangianrelaxationproceduregivesthe
tightestlowerboundsforallinstanceswhencomparedtopreviouslowerboundingapproaches.
