Abstract
We studyasinglemachineschedulingprobleminwhichtheschedulerdeterminesduedatesfor
differentjobsinagrouptechnologyenvironment.Ingrouptechnology(GT)environment,apartitionof
the jobsintogroups(families)isgivenandjobsofthesamefamilyarerequiredtobeprocessed
consecutively.Thepartitionofthejobsintofamiliesisdoneinordertoachieveefficiencyofhigh-
volume productionbyexploitingsimilaritiesofdifferentproductsandactivitiesintheirproduction.
Since customersofsimilarjobsmayexpectthatalljobswithinthesamegroupwillbeassignedwiththe
same duedate,wesuggestanoriginalduedateassignmentmethodinwhichalljobswithinafamilyare
restrictedtobeassignedthesameduedate,whileeachfamilycanbeassignedaduedatewithoutany
restriction.Theproposedmethodprovidesanextensionoftwoearliermethodsthatappearinthe
literature,onewhichincludesasinglefamilyandtheotherinwhichthenumberoffamiliesisidentical
to thenumberofjobs.Ourobjectiveistofindthejobscheduleandtheduedateforeachgroupthat
minimizesanobjectivefunctionwhichincludesearliness,tardinessandduedateassignmentpenalties.
We alsoextendtheanalysistoaddressthecaseinwhichthejobprocessingtimesareresource
dependent.Forthiscaseweincludethetotalweightedresourceconsumptionandthemakespan
penaltiestotheobjectivefunction.
