Abstract :
This paperaddressesthequestionofservicingwarrantiesforrepairableitems.Eachtimeaunitunder
warrantyfails,themanufacturerisobligedtorestoreittooperatingconditioneitherbyrepairingitor
by replacingitwithanewunit.Thedecisiontoreplaceorrepairdependsonavarietyoffactorssuchas
cost ofimmediaterepair,ageoftheunit,theextentofusage,theconditionoftheunit,andthe
remainingwarrantyperiod.Weconsiderproductswithphasetypelifetimedistributions,wherethe
phase describestheconditionoftheunit,anddevelopadecisionsupportsystem(DSS)fortherepair/
replace decisionsinservicingthewarrantyusingthecriterionofexpectedcostofservicingthe
remainingwarranty.AcomprehensiveexampleispresentedtoillustratetheDSS.Effectivenessofthe
proposedDSSisverifiedbysimulation.
