Abstract :
The purposeofthispaperistwofold.First,itexplorestheissueofproducingvalid,compactround-robin
sportsschedulesbyconsideringtheproblemasoneofgraphcolouring.Usingthismodel,whichcan
also beextendedtoincorporateadditionalconstraints,thedifficultyofsuchproblemsisthengaugedby
consideringtheperformanceofanumberofdifferentgraphcolouringalgorithms.Second,neigh-
bourhoodoperatorsarethenproposedthatcanbederivedfromtheunderlyinggraphcolouringmodel
and, inanexampleapplication,weshowhowtheseoperatorscanbeusedinconjunctionwithmulti-
objectiveoptimisationtechniquestoproducehigh-qualitysolutionstoareal-worldsportsleague
schedulingproblemencounteredattheWelshRugbyUnioninCardiff,Wales.
