Abstract :
In thisarticlewepresentaheuristicbasedonLagrangeanrelaxationforschedulingrentalvehicles.The
schedulingproblemcanbeformulatedasasetoflargeassignmentproblemswithlinkingconstraints.
We discussthetheorybehindtheheuristic,includingtheabilitytoobtainlowerbounds.Theheuristicis
based onideasfirstintroducedbyD.Wedelin.
EmpiricaltestingshowsthatourheuristicissuperiortotheexactsolutionprocedureoftheMILP
formulationwiththecommercialILOGCplexsolverasitgenerallyproducesbettersolutionswithina
set timelimit.Moreover,theheuristiccaneasilybeparallelizedtotakeadvantageofmulticoreCPUs.
The workpresentedherehasbeenmotivatedbyareal-lifeapplicationandiscurrentlybeingusedby
companiesthatrentoutrecreationalvehicles.Testingondatasetsfromthesecompaniesshowsthe
practicalityofouralgorithm.
