An efficientheuristicforadaptiveproductionschedulingandcontrol in one-of-a-kindproduction

Even thoughresearchinflowshopproductionschedulinghasbeencarriedoutformanydecades,there is stillagapbetweenresearchandapplication—especiallyinmanufacturingparadigmssuchasone-of- a-kindproduction(OKP)thatintenselychallengesrealtimeadaptiveproductionschedulingand control.Indeed,manyofthemostpopularheuristicscontinuetouseJohnson’salgorithm(1954)astheir core. Thispaperpresentsastatespace(SS)heuristic,integratedwithaclosed-loopfeedbackcontrol structure,toachieveadaptiveproductionschedulingandcontrolinOKP.OurSSheuristic,becauseofits simplicityandcomputationalefficiency,hasthepotentialtobecomeacoreheuristic.Throughaseries of casestudies,includinganindustrialimplementationinOKP,ourSS-basedproductionschedulingand controlsystemdemonstratessignificantpotentialtoimproveproductionefficiency.
