Abstract
The vehicleroutingproblemwithtimewindowsisacomplexcombinatorialproblemwithmanyreal-
world applicationsintransportationanddistributionlogistics.Itsmainobjectiveistofindthelowest
distance setofroutestodelivergoods,usingafleetofidenticalvehicleswithrestrictedcapacity,to
customerswithservicetimewindows.However,thereareotherobjectives,andhavingarangeof
solutionsrepresentingthetrade-offsbetweenobjectivesiscrucialformanyapplications.Although
previousresearchhasusedevolutionarymethodsforsolvingthisproblem,ithasrarelyconcentratedon
the optimizationofmorethanoneobjective,andhardlyeverexplicitlyconsideredthediversityof
solutions.Thispaperproposesandanalyzesanovelmulti-objectiveevolutionaryalgorithm,which
incorporatesmethodsformeasuringthesimilarityofsolutions,tosolvethemulti-objectiveproblem.
The algorithmisappliedtoastandardbenchmarkproblemset,showingthatwhenthesimilarity
measureisusedappropriately,thediversityandqualityofsolutionsishigherthanwhenitisnotused,
and thealgorithmachieveshighlycompetitiveresultscomparedwithpreviouslypublishedstudiesand
those fromapopularevolutionarymulti-objectiveoptimizer.
