Abstract
This paperpresentsanevolutionaryalgorithm,calledthemulti-objectivesymbioticevolutionary
algorithm(MOSEA),tosolveamulti-objectiveFMSprocessplanning(MFPP)problemwithvarious
flexibilities.TheMFPPproblemsimultaneouslyconsidersfourtypesofflexibilitiesrelatedtomachine,
tool, sequence,andprocessandtakesintoaccountthreeobjectives:balancingthemachineworkload,
minimizingpartmovements,andminimizingtoolchanges.TheMOSEAismodeledasatwo-leveled
structuretofindasetofwell-distributedsolutionsclosetothetrueParetooptimalsolutions.To
promotethesearchcapabilityofsuchsolutions,twomainprocessesimitatingsymbioticevolutionand
endosymbioticevolutionareintroduced,togetherwithanelitiststrategyandafitnesssharingscheme.
EvolutionarycomponentssuitablefortheMFPPproblemareprovided.Withavarietyoftest-bed
problems,theperformanceoftheproposedMOSEAiscomparedwiththoseofexistingmulti-objective
evolutionaryalgorithms.TheexperimentalresultsshowthattheMOSEAispromisinginsolution
convergenceanddiversity.
