Abstract :
The containerloadingproblem,whichissignificantforanumberofindustrialsectors,aimstoobtaina
high spaceutilisationinthecontainerwhilesatisfyingpracticalconstraints.Thispaperpresentsanovel
hybridtabusearchapproachtothecontainerloadingproblem.Aloadingheuristicisdevisedto
incorporateheuristicstrategieswithahandlingmethodforremainingspacestogenerateoptimal
loadingarrangementsofboxeswithstabilityconsidered.Thetabusearchtechnique,whichcoversthe
encoding,evaluationcriteriaandconfigurationofneighbourhoodandcandidatesolutions,isusedto
improvetheperformanceoftheloadingheuristic.Experimentalresultswithbenchmarkdatashowthat
the hybridapproachprovidesabetterspaceutilisationthanthepublishedapproachesunderthe
conditionofallloadedboxeswithonehundredpercentsupportfrombelow.Moreover,itisshownthat
the hybridtabusearchcansolveproblemswiththeconstraintsofweightlimitandweightdistribution
with realworlddata.
