Abstract :
The two-dimensionalstrippackingproblemoccursinindustriessuchasmetal,wood,glass,paper,and textiles.Theprobleminvolvescuttingshapesfromalargerstocksheetorrollofmaterial,while minimisingwaste.Thisisawellstudiedproblemforwhichmanyheuristicmethodologiesareavailablein the literature,rangingfromthebasic‘one-pass’best-fitheuristic,tothestateoftheartReactiveGRASP and SVC(SubKP)iterativeprocedures.Thecontributionofthispaperistopresentamuchsimplerbut equallycompetitiveiterativepackingmethodologybasedonsqueakywheeloptimisation.Aftereach completepacking(iteration),apenaltyisappliedtopiecesthatdirectlydecreasedthesolutionquality. Thesepenaltiesinformthepackinginthenextiteration,sothattheoffendingpiecesarepackedearlier. This methodologyisdeterministicandveryeasytoimplement,andcanobtainsomebestresultson benchmarkinstancesfromtheliterature.
