Abstract :
Graph partitioningisoneofthefundamentalNP-completeproblemswhichiswidelyappliedinmany
domains,suchasVLSIdesign,imagesegmentation,datamining,etc.Givenagraph G¼(V,E), thebalanced
k-partitioningproblemconsistsinpartitioningthevertexset V into k disjointsubsetsofaboutthesame
size, suchthatthenumberofcuttingedgesisminimized.Inthispaper,wepresentamultilevelalgorithm
for balancedpartition,whichintegratesapowerfulrefinementprocedurebasedontabusearchwith
periodicperturbations.Experimentalevaluationsonawidecollectionofbenchmarkgraphsshowthatthe
proposedapproachnotonlycompetesveryfavorablywiththetwowell-knownpartitioningpackages
METIS andCHACO,butalsoimprovesmorethantwothirdsofthebestbalancedpartitionseverreportedin
the literature.
