Abstract
Efficiencyandeffectivenesscanbeconsideredaskeyelementsforachievinggreaterbusiness
performanceandabetterdecisionmaking.Thisstudyappliesthedataenvelopmentanalysis(DEA)
approachcombiningmultipleoutputsandinputstoexploretheefficiencyandeffectivenessof30global
e-retailingcompanies.Theempiricalresultrevealsthattheoveralltechnicalinefficienciesofthe
companiesareprimarilyduetoscaleinefficienciesratherthanpuretechnicalinefficiencies.Approxi-
mately43%oftheglobale-retailingcompaniesneedtoreducetheirinputsiftheyaretobecomeefficient.
Only 57%oftheglobale-retailingcompaniesareregardedasefficient.Thisindicatesthatoverallglobal
e-retailingcompaniesstillhaveroomforimprovingtheirmanagementpractices.Furthermore,when
bias-correctedefficiencieswereusedtoranktheglobale-retailingcompanysample,therankingorder
changedcomparedtotherankingorderoftheoriginalefficiencies.ThissuggeststhatanyDEAstudy
shouldalsoemploybootstrappingasstandardpracticetodetectthereliabilityofefficiencyrankingandto
have amoreaccuratebenchmarkofthefirms.
