Abstract :
Rheumatoid arthritis - a systemic inflammatory disorder of obscured etiology is supposed to be a major health problem in Pakistan. The prevalence rate of RA is increasing rapidly and become a significant risk factor of disability/mortality in the general population (aged between 40-50 years). The present study aims to assess the complete biochemical profile, such as serum lipid profile, (Total Lipid, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C), enzymes profile (ALP, AST, CK, ALT) and the renal profile (urea, bun, creatinine, uric acid), CRP and Glucose in RF+ve, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients as compared to the normal control individuals by using the standardized methods. Our results shows that the patients with rheumatoid arthritis exhibit atherogenic lipid profile, characterized by an increase serum level of total cholesterol, LDL-C and triglycerides with reduced level of HDL-cholesterol suggesting that these patients are at a special risk for atherosclerotic events and cardiovascular diseases. The hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglycerdemia were also the indicators of disturbances related to the renal diseases, could further confirm our results suggesting the correlation between lipid profile, RA and renal dysfunction. As far as for the correlation between RA and renal dysfunction is concerned our results have shown that the sufferers do have increase concentration of renal dysfunction markers but still we could not suggest the root cause for such condition. We conclude that this study will provide baseline values for our population, and is also helpful in designing better diagnosis strategy and more accurate treatment for the side effect profile, leading to different health problems particularly renal failure or cardiovascular disturbances etc.
