Abstract :
ABSTRACT: Earthworks volumes calculations are necessary activity for nearly all construction projects and are often accomplished as a part of routes survey, especially for roads and highways. Earthwork computations are the calculations of earthwork volumes or quantities to determine final grades, to balance cut and fill, and to plan the most economical movement of materials. This research aims to compute earthworks volumes by using satellite images and digital terrain models where area study was part of Karbala city. This image was corrected by using georeferencing process to fit coordinates system ,where four points on this image was measured by Global Positioning System(GPS).The surfaces method were used to compute earthworks volumes from different between two surfaces, where digital terrain model was represented first surface (earth surface ) and second surface was represented a part of proposed road way surface as cross sections are placed along the horizontal and vertical alignments, then over a given surface area a (viewed top-down), match points at the same (X ,Y) between the two surfaces, common types of points (X , Y) include a grid of points, so calculate the difference in elevation ( Z ) between two surfaces ,then compute the area and total volumes between two surfaces. This method is much more precisely from other methods.
