Abstract :
The study determines the relationship between personality types and leadership styles of principals in secondary
schools in the academic year 2011-2012 in Islamshahr city. The statistical population of the study includes all 74
principals of Islamshahr schools. Simple random sampling method is used based on the sample size determining
formula to select a representative sample including 62 people and increase measurement accuracy. The studyʹs
measuring instrument consists of three questionnaires. They are Cattell16 factorial personality types
questionnaire, leadership style 35-items questionnaire developed by Bardner and Metzcus to measure leadership
style (relation-oriented, task-oriented) and 10-item questionnaire developed by Hellriegel and Slocum to assess
contingency leadership style used. In the study, validation of the questionnaires has been calculated by
Cronbachʹs alpha. The questionnaire has been conducted on the sample through by independent t test and
Pearson correlation the results of the present study represent the following contents: 1-There is a direct
relationship between personality types and leadership styles; 2-There is a significant difference between men and
women realistic personality type, and women are more realistic; 3-There is a significant difference between men
and women task orientation leadership style. Women are more task-oriented; 4-There is a significant relationship
between the conservative personality type and contingency leadership style.
