  • Abstract
    Thepresentstudyperformedfull-scalepipetestsusing100ASchedule80pipespecimenswithsimulatednotchedandcircularwallthinningtoinvestigatethefailurebehaviorofnotchedwall-thinnedpipes.Thetestswereconductedunderbothmonotonicandcyclicbendingmomentsataconstantinternalpressureof10MPaatroomtemperature.Thefailurepattern,loadcarryingcapacity,deformationability,andfatiguestrengthofthenotchedwall-thinnedpipeswereevaluatedbycomparingresultstothoseofcircularwall-thinnedpipes.Theinvestigationshowedthattheeffectofthetypeofthinningonthefailurebehaviorwasmoresensitiveundercyclicloadingconditionsthanundermonotonicloadingconditions.Theloadcarryingcapacityofpipeswithnotchedwallthinningwasapproximatelythesameorslightlylessthanthatofpipeswithcircularwallthinningwhenthethinningareawassubjectedtotensilestress.However,whenthethinningareawassubjectedtocompressivestress,theloadcarryingcapacityofpipeswithnotchedwallthinningwasgreaterthanthatofpipescontainingcircularwallthinning.Thedeformationabilityandfatiguestrengthincreasedproportionallywiththeaxiallengthofthethinningdefect,andthusthesepropertiesweresignificantlyreducedinnotchedwall-thinnedpipes.
