Abstract
TheirradiationtestofHTR-10sphericalfuelelementswascarriedoutintheRussianIVV-2Mresearchreactorwiththeirradiationtemperatureof1000±50°C.Aftertheburnupreached100,000MWd/t,theirradiationtemperaturewasraisedtoahighertemperature.ThehighR/Blevelsobservedduringthenormalirradiationtestwereduetomanufacturedefectsofonetofourcoatedparticles.Post-irradiationexaminationindicatedthatatnormalirradiationcondition,thepyrolyticcarbon(PyC)andsiliconcarbide(SiC)layersofparticleskepttheirintegrity.However,afterirradiationathighertemperatures,severaltypesofdefectsincludingradialandtangentialcracksinSiClayers,cracksinbufferlayers,andthroughcoatingfailurewerefound,andthefailurefractionreached5.8×10−2.Thesedefectsweremostlikelycausedbythehigherthermalstressesgenerated.Inthisstudy,PANAMAfuelperformancecodewasusedtoestimatetheheatingtemperatureintheirradiationtest.Thecalculatedresultsshowedthatwhentheheatingtemperatureismuchhigherthan1850°C,thefailurefractionofcoatedparticlecanreachthelevelof1%.
