Abstract :
StilltodayafterdecadesofsevereaccidentresearchitisnotwellunderstoodwhythemoltencoriumdidnotattackorevenpenetratethelowerheadvesselwallintheTMI2accident.Thefindingscanonlybeexplainedbyadditionalassumptionswhichhavebeenproposedbyvariousauthors.ThispaperisalsolookingforanexplanationbyexaminingtheroleofthedebriscoolingintheTMIlowerhead.Thepresentknowledgeofdebriscoolingisbasedonsmall-scaleexperimentswithsimulantdebris.Itisarguedthattheexperimentshavebeenstoppedtoearlyandthereforedonotrevealthepotentialofdebrisbedcoolabilityincaseofacoriumdebrisbed.ItisalsoarguedthatinTMIthedebrisbedwasinastateofturbulenceandfluidizationsuchthatthecoolabiltywasmuchhigherthaninthesmall-scaleexperiments.BasicallythispaperhypothesizesthattheunknownphenomenonintheTMI2accidentisthestronginteractionofthedebrisparticlesofawiderangeofgrainsizesandthestrongturbulentmotionofthecoolingfluidandvapormixtureinconjunctionwitha“virtualgap”atthevesselwall.
