Abstract :
Theaimofthiseditorialarticleistoprovidesomestructuringofthesubjectaddressedinthispartoftheissue,which,intheviewofthepresentauthors,hasnotthatclearlybeenreachedbythespecificcontributions.Ex-vesselcoriumbehaviorisawidefield.Therefore,classificationofthegoalsofinvestigationswithinasafetyphilosophyisespeciallyrequiredtogetnotlostindetailedaspects.Theoverallgoalsherearethecoolabilityandretentionoptionsunderex-vesselconditions.Basedonscenarioconsiderationsgenerallyaddressingrisksandoptions,generalprinciplesofcoolingandretentiondevicesareoutlined.Sincetheconcreteerosionbymeltyieldsamajorriskandhastobeconsideredintheconceptsanddevices,andalsosinceseveralcontributionstothispartaredealingwithspecificaspectsofthismoltencore-concreteinteraction(MCCI),alargepartofthiseditorialpaperconcernsthestatusofknowledgeandmodelingandthelinesofresearchinthisarea.ThestatusandtheperspectivesofcodesisespeciallyaddressedbyowncontributionsofoneoftheauthorswiththeGRScodeWEXandwithMEDICIS,bothcodesincludedintheEuropeanintegralcodeASTEC.Finally,thecoolabilityquestionsarediscussedwithrespecttothedifferentconceptsingeneralandthoseaddressedspecificallyinthepresentcontributions.Insomeconsiderations,gasproductionbyerosionplaysaroletoproduceporousorparticulatedebrisandthustoenhancecoolability.Waterinjectionfrombottomisamoredirectandprobablymoreeffectivemeasuretoreachthis,specificallydesignedintheCOMETcorecatcherconcept.Specificcontributionsinthispartdealwiththisconcept,whichismostcloselyrelatedtothegeneralsubjectofthepresentissue.
