Abstract
Thepebblebedmodularreactor(PBMR)isthefirstpebblebedreactorthatwillbeutilisedinahightemperaturedirectBraytoncycleconfiguration.ThisimpliesthatthereareanumberofuniquefeaturesinthePBMRthatextendfromtheGermanexperiencebase.OneofthechallengesinthedesignofthePBMRisdevelopinganunderstandingoftheexpectedbehaviourofthereactorthroughanalysesandsimulationsandmanagingtheintegrateddesignprocessbetweenthedesigners,thephysicistsandtheanalysts.
Thisintegrateddesignprocessismanagedthroughmodel-baseddevelopmentwork.Three-dimensionalCADmodelsareconstructedofthecomponentsandpartsinthereactor.FromtheCADmodels,CFDmodels,neutronicmodels,shieldingmodels,FEMmodelsandotherthermodynamicmodelsarederived.Thesemodelsrangefromverysimplemodelstoextremelydetailedandcomplexmodels.Themodelsareusedinlegacysoftwareaswellascommercialoff-the-shelfsoftware.Thedifferentmodelsarealsousedincode-to-codecomparisonstoverifytheresults.
Thispaperwillbrieflydiscussthedifferentmodelsandtheinteractionbetweenthemodels,andhowthemodelsareusedintheiterativedesignprocessthatisusedinthedevelopmentofthereactoratPBMR.
