Abstract :
Recentterroristattacksusingcommandeeredcommercialairlinersoncivilstructureshaveraisedtheissueoftheabilityofnuclearpowerplantstosurvivetheconsequencesofanairlinercrash.ThestructuralintegrityanalysisduetotheeffectsofanaircraftcrashonanIgnalinanuclearpowerplant(INPP)accidentlocalizationsystem(ALS)buildingisthesubjectofthispaper.Acombinationofthefiniteelementmethodandempiricalrelationshipswereusedfortheanalysis.AglobalstructuralintegrityanalysiswasperformedforaportionoftheALSbuildingusingthedynamicloadingfromanaircraftcrashimpactmodel.Thelocaleffectscausedbyimpactoftheaircraftʹsengineonthebuildingwallwereevaluatedindependentlybyusinganempiricalformula. TheresultsfromthecrashanalysisofatwinenginecommercialaircraftshowthattheimpactedreinforcedconcretewalloftheALSbuildingwillnothavethrough-the-wallconcretefailure,andthereinforcementwillnotfail.Strain-rateeffectswerefoundtodelaytheonsetofcracking.Therefore,thestructuralintegrityoftheimpactedwalloftheINPPALSbuildingwillbemaintainedduringthecrasheventstudied.
