Abstract :
ExperimentalthermalhydraulicresearchhasbeenconductedatOregonStateUniversityforthepurposeofassessingtheperformanceofanewreactordesignconcept,themulti-applicationsmalllightwaterreactor(MASLWR).TheMASLWRisapressurizedlightwaterreactordesignwithanetoutputof35MWethatusesnaturalcirculationinbothnormalandtransientoperation.Duetoitssmallsize,portabilityandmodularity,theMASLWRdesigniswellsuitedtohelpfillthepotentialneedforgridappropriatereactordesignsforsmallerelectricitygridsasmaybefoundindevelopingorremoteregions.ThepurposeoftheOSUMASLWRtestfacilityistoassesstheoperationoftheMASLWRundernormalfulloperatingpressureandfulltemperatureconditionsandtoassessthepassivesafetysystemsundertransientconditions.Thedatageneratedbythetestingprogramwillbeusedtoassesscomputercodecalculationsandtoprovideabetterunderstandingofthethermal-hydraulicphenomenainthedesignoftheMASLWRNSSS.Duringthistestingprogram,fourtestswereconductedattheOSUMASLWRtestfacility.Thesetestsincludedonedesignbasisaccidentandonebeyonddesignbasisaccident.Duringtheperformanceofthesetests,plantoperationstoincludestartup,normaloperationandshutdownevolutionsweredemonstratedsuccessfully.
