  • Abstract
    TheWF(wallfailure)testoftheEAGLEprogram,inwhich∼2kgofuraniumdioxidefuel-pinsweremeltedbynuclearheating,wassuccessfullyconductedintheIGR(ImpulseGraphiteReactor)ofNNC/Kazakhstan.Inthistest,a3mm-thickstainlesssteel(SS)wallstructurewasplacedbetweenfuelpinsanda10mm-thicksodium-filledchannel(sodiumgap).Duringthetransient,fuelpinswereheated,whichledtotheformationofafuel-steelmixturepool.Underthetransientnuclearheatingcondition,theSSwallwasstronglyheatedbythemoltenpool,leadingtowallfailure.Thetimeneededforfuelpenetrationintothesodium-filledgapwasveryshort(lessthan1safterthepoolformation).TheresultsuggeststhatmoltencorematerialsformedinhypotheticalLMFBRcoredisruptiveaccidentshaveacertainpotentialtodestroySS-wallboundariesearlyintheaccidentphase,therebyprovidingfuelescapepathsfromthecoreregion.Theearlyestablishmentofsuchfuelescapepathsisregardedasafavorablecharacteristicineliminatingthepossibilityofseverere-criticalityevents.ApreliminaryinterpretationontheWFtestresultsispresentedinthispaper.
