Abstract :
ABSTRACT:In order to study the effects of mixed and row intercropping of sesame and bean on yield and yield components, a split-plot experiment based on randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted in the Research Farm of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in the growing season 2011-2012. Cropping systems (mixed or row intercropping) were allocated to the main plots and different planting ratios (25% bean +75% sesame, 25% sesame +75% bean, 50% sesame +50% bean, pure sesame, pure bean) were assigned to the sub-plots. Results indicated that yield and yield components of sesame and bean were affected by experimental factors. In all cases, row intercropping was superior compared to mixed intercropping. The highest sesame yield (3129 kg/ha) was obtained with 50% sesame + 50% bean and the highest bean yield (1088 kg/ha) was attained in pure bean. Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) values were ? 1 in mixed intercropping. The highest value of Relative Crowding Coefficient (RCC) (2.19) was achieved in the50% sesame + 50% bean. The lowest amount of Competition index (CI) (0.001) was observed in the 50% sesame + 50% bean treatment. Based on aggressivity index, bean was the dominant species.
