  • Abstract
    Thispaperinvestigatestheempiricalformulaeusedinengineeringpracticetopredictthecriticalperforationenergyofmetallicplatesstruckbyrigidprojectilesinthesub-ordnanceregime.Mainfactorsaffectingthecriticalperforationenergyareidentifiedandvalidconditionsforeachempiricalformulaarecompared.Dimensionalanalysisisconductedtoshowthedependenceofthenon-dimensionalcriticalimpactenergyonotherinfluentialnon-dimensionalnumbers.Availableempiricalformulaearere-expressedinnon-dimensionalforms.AmodifiedJowett/AEAequationisproposedtopredictthecriticalperforationenergyofaflat-endedshortprojectile.Thepresentworkincreasestheconfidenceofusingtheseempiricalformulaeandcanberegardedasaquickguideforballisticprotectiondesignofmetallicshieldsandsteelarmourplates.
