Abstract :
Mineralwoolinsulationdebris,whichisgeneratedduringaloss-of-coolant-accident(LOCA),hasthepotentialtounderminethelong-termrecirculationcapabilityoftheemergencycorecoolantsystem(ECCS)inanuclearpowerplant.Mostimportantly,ECCSpumpsarefacedwithanincreasingpressuredropwhileinsulationdebrisaccumulatesatthepumpsuctionstrainers.Thepresentedstudyaimsatmodellingthepressuredropofflowsacrossgrowingcakesofcompressible,fibrousmaterialsandattheimplementationofthemodelintoageneral-purposethree-dimensional(3D)computationalfluiddynamics(CFD)code.Computedpressuredropsarecomparedwithexperimentallyfoundvalues.TheabilityoftheCFDimplementationtosimulate3Dflowswithanon-uniformlydistributedparticlephaseisexemplifiedusingastep-likechannelgeometrywithahorizontallyembeddedstrainerplate.
