Abstract :
The causes of mortality among pigs and piglets suffering from bronchopneumonia with bleed and curvature of turbinate bone were investigated from an organized piggery in Meghalaya, India. Out of 90 pigs maintained at the farm, 57 (63.3%) were affected. Out of 18 post mortem samples and 39 nasal swabs from live pigs processed for bacterial isolation, 47 (69.1%) yielded the isolation of Bordetella bronchiseptica and 5 (8.78%) yielded both Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida. In vitro antibiotic sensitivity revealed more than 50% (28) isolates resistant to ampicillin, doxycycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin. The SEM analysis of infected trachea and lungs showed massive mucus deposition and destruction of cilia along with attachment of bacteria and total destruction of alveolar wall with deposition of cellular debris respectively. In Congo red binding test, 42 Bordetella isolates gave strong positive reaction. In haemagglutination test, all the 47 Bordetella bronchiseptica isolates agglutinated with sheep, rabbit, cattle and pig RBCs. The Bordetella and Pasteurella isolates were further confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The present study established the involvement of B. bronchiseptica as a possible causative agent in bronchopneumonia of pigs in Meghalaya based on the isolation of the organisms and their characterization.
