Abstract :
The course of experimental Trypanosoma congolense infection in local domestic pigs was examined. Fifteen (n=15) locally bread domestic, mixed sex pigs were experimentally infected with T. congolense and divided into three(3) treatment groups, Group A, Group B and group C. Group A(Control with 3 pigs), group B( infected and non treated with 4 pigs) and group C( infected and treated with 8pigs that is divided into two sub-group of 4 pigs each). The clinical course of the disease was monitored for 42days post infection (PI). The pre-patent period in the infected groups was observed to be 13days. Not all the infected pigs became parasitaemic and clinically ill. Mild anaemia, lacrimal discharge, penile protrusion with hemorrhage and prepucial inflammation was observed in the parasitaemic males. 5(33.3%) of the infected pigs were aparasitaemic throughout the course of the study. Experimental infections of pigs with T. congolense results in penile protrusion with hemorrhages and inflame prepuce, pyrexia and bilateral lacrimal discharge.
