Abstract :
Kalanchoe integra is used in folklore medicine for hypertension and to prevent and treat cerebrovascular disorders like stroke etc. lesser degrees of ischemia possibly may contribute to the initiation of apoptosis and low CBF, and cerebral oxygen delivery has been associated with risk of later death, cerebral atrophy, or neurodevelopmental deficit. To investigate the effect of kalanchoe integra leave extract on cerebral circulation and its cerebroprotective effect in a rat model of cerebral ischaemia, aqueous extracts of Kalanchoe integra (300 mg/kg effective dose) was administered 7 days prior to induction of cerebral ischemia (prophylactic administration) in white wistar rats of both sexes. Cerebral ischaemia was induced by tying both carotid arteries and reducing the arterial blood pressure (ABP) to 40 mm Hg by graded haemorrhage for a period of 12-minutes. The shed blood was reinfused after 12-minutes. With each reduction in ABP the corresponding blood flow was monitored via the hydrogen clearance method. Cerebral ischaemia was accompanied by severe dysautoregulation shifting the lower limit of autoregulation to a higher level of arterial blood pressure. The administration of the kalanchoe extract restored the cerebral blood flow to the norm. The cerebral blood flow was significantly impaired after ischaemia. Kalanchoe integra reversed the dysautoregulation reaction of the cerebral vessels after cerebral ischaemia and further improved on the cerebral blood flow autoregulatory coefficient.
