A bioremediation teaching module based on BIO1D

Educational use of environmental software offers both opportunity and challenges to software developers. Desirable attributes for educational-use environmental software are discussed and illustrated using the bioremediation software package BIO1D. Examples are presented to illustrate how one can ‘port’ environmental software into the classroom, and on how this can help modernize and enliven engineering education. An example student simulation is also presented to illustrate how this can empower students to innovate with advanced technologies such as bioremediation. It is hoped that this paper will lead to more contributions on instructional use of environmental software. Modelers should be supplying more leadership in the debate about the proper roles of environmental models in both education and practice.
