Air–surface exchange research and related studies: A scientific tribute to Marvin L. Wesely

This article is a tribute to a departed colleague and friend, Dr. Marvin L. Wesely. A senior meteorologist at Argonne National Laboratory, Wesely died from a rare form of heart cancer on January 20, 2003. He had achieved national and international prominence in the areas of atmospheric surface layer turbulence, eddy-covariance measurement, and analysis techniques, and dry deposition of air pollutants. With colleagues, he contributed to the development of methodologies for formulating dry deposition processes in atmospheric and biospheric models that are now in standard use worldwide. His research in this field was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy for 30 years.
