Abstract :
As a result of intensive research and development in the area of computer aided design and surface development, many tools are available today for representation of curves and surfaces. B-splines (Basis splines) with their characteristic features of flexibility and local controllability form an important tool in the representation of curves and surfaces. B-spline shape is influenced by the knot vector. A B-spline curve typically representing a body plan line or waterline must be capable of being improved. In this work, afairness criterion is employed to locate the discontinuity in curvature and corresponding knot location. A knot removal, knot insertion algorithm is made use of to improve the shape of the B-spline representation. The curve is re-represented using quintic B-spline representation. Finally the surface is re-represented using the new control polygon points and on the basis of bi-quintic surface representation. This is offered as a new technique for surface representation and is demonstrated in the case of a BSRA series ship.
