Abstract :
Coverage-dependent structures of the Mn-deposited Cu(001) surface were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. At low coverages, Mn atoms adsorb homogeneously as a single atom or a small cluster. When the coverage was increased, Mn atoms displace Cu substrate atoms to form a surface alloy at 0.5 monolayer coverage. Further Mn deposition resulted in the Mn islands. The morphology change upon annealing of the Mn-deposited surface is also described.
