    A freshly-cleaved solution-grown CdI2 single crystal shows spatially-extended linear steps, ditch-like troughs and spiral-like islands in its topography. Long-term exposure in ambient air modifies the material topography into nano-scaled craters and nested protrusions. q1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
