The diet quality and type has a great role to increase the resistance against diseases and good growth of aquatic animals. Carotenoid pigments are responsible for flesh pigmentation of edible fish and skin color and marketing of ornamental fish and carotenoids should be added to diet of cultured fish due to lack of its synthesis. This study was carried out to compare the effects of different natural foods on growth, survival and amounts of skin carotenoids of cultured Astronotus ocellatus fingerlings, during 60 days. The culture medium was contained glass aquaria in controlled condition with 12 L: 12 D photoperiod and water temperature of 28±1oC. 360 Oscar fry randomly were studied in 4 test groups included: treatment1 fed with concentrate diet, treatment 2 fed with 67%concentrate and 33% frozen earth worm, treatment 3 fed with 67%concentrate and 33% frozen Artemia urmiana and treatment 4 fed with 67% concentrate and 33% cow heart. Each treatment contains 3replications each consisted of 30 Oscar. The daily diet was 3% of body weight. The amounts of total carotenoids use spectrophotometer, astaxantin, canthaxantin and beta-carotene using HPLC, were determined in the skin of A. ocellatus at the end of the experiment period. The results revealed that Artemia, earthworm and cow heart as supplementary food had a significant higher length and weight gain and SGR compared to concentrate diet (p<0.05). At the end of the study period, CF was significantly higher in treatments fed by Artemia and earthworm supplements compared to concentrate diet (p< 0.05) but treatment containing cow heart did not show a significant difference with other ones(p>0.05). The highest survival rates were related to treatments1 (94.47±1.65), 3(93.43±1.65) and 4(90.43±1.33), respectively and the lowest survival rate was due to treatment 2 (70.53±2.67) (p< 0.05). Aggressive behavior (eye catching and biting the tail fins of other fish) was observed in earth worm containing diet. The most pigmentation obtained from the diet contained Artemia urmiana. The highest and lowest amounts of total carotenoids were observed in treatments 3(9.17 ±0.10 mg/g) and 2(5.17 ±0.09mg/g). Also, the highest and lowest amounts of asthaxanthin were observed in treatments 3(503.63 ±1.88ng/g) and 4(70.48 ±0.00ng/g), respectively. The use of Artemia urmiana compared to earth worm and cow heart significantly increased the amounts of carotenoid pigments especially asthaxanthin in Oscar skin. Overall, nutrition with natural foods has a positive effect on the growth of Oscar fish and the use of Artemia urmiana supplementation is recommended for Oscar fish to achive both optimal growth and survival and skin color improvement.
