Platinum aluminide coatings are used on Ni- base superalloys in order to
improve their oxidation and corrosion resistance and they are essential for
fabrication of high temperature superalloy parts i.e. turbine blades. In the present
study, the formation of Platinum aluminde coatings on Nickel-based superalloys was
investigated. In this study, sputtering ion beam technique under argon plasma was
used for deposition of platinum and aluminum layers and subsequent heat treatment
applied to fabricate these coatings.
Characterization of coatings shows some resemblance with the results of other
investigations but coatings also show some special features also. Microstructure of
coatings reveals that interdiffusion occurs and essential compounds formed but it
has some irregularities also, which can be related to sputtering method as well as
surface treatment. Diffusion of Nickel and Platinum through thickness made four
different aluminum compounds in the coating which some of them were not
characterized well in previous investigations.
