Blooming peaks of certain Lebanese medicinal plants have been identified and
collected from various altitude and Lebanese regions. They have been hydro-distilled by the
Clavenger method, and the physical and chemical properties of the essential oils have been
determined. The yield ofEO varies between 0.7 and 2.2 % v/w ofplant material. The odor is
characteristic but the color varies according to seasons. The principal components ratios of
EO have been evaluated. They have shown a wide diversity within each species and variety of
Lamiaceae family. Three categories were characterized, the menthol plants (Mentha,
Micromeria barbata, Micromeria myrthifolia); the thymol plants (Origanum majorana,
Origanum syriacum) and the highly volatile terpene plants known to be rich in Eucalyptol, a &
fJ-pinene (Rosmarinus officinalis, Salvia libanotica). Lebanese plants are considered to have a
low toxic effect since smaller percentage ofpulgone, carvacrol and p-thujone as compared to
same species from Europe was determined. Their minor components adapt favorably with the
major components bringing out a synergetic effect to play important role in the medicinal use
or elsewhere.
